The estimated prevalence of autism in the United States has increased from 1 in 150 in 2000 to 1 in 31 in 2022. Improved diagnostic tools, increased awareness, and availability of services are all possible explanations for an increase in observed prevalence of autism. An actual rise in prevalence of autism, though, cannot be ruled out. Continuing to monitor trends in autism prevalence is imperative to ensuring people living with autism have the supports and services they need to flourish. This data informs policy makers, researchers, school systems and providers on the number of supports needed, as well as the types of services to best serve the population.
